In a recent discussion with a very talented friend, he said something I hear far too often:

“I hate my voice.”

So many people say this, or at least think this. Does anyone really enjoy hearing their voice on an answering machine? Or do you cringe at the very thought of hearing your voice on the background of a friend’s video?

It’s time to GET OVER THIS, people.

The thing is, you have to get over whatever is holding you back. Because whatever is holding YOU back will hold everyone else back. NO ONE likes their voice, yet no one seems to judge the voice of others. It simply is what it is. Your voice is YOURS. Own it, be proud of it, and don’t EVER let it hold you back. Not from talking, singing, or expressing the words that make you different.

My friend was recording a video for school, and the first draft sounded … boring. He was so concerned with how his voice sounded that he lost all life and enthusiasm that was usually inseparable from his voice. It wasn’t genuine. It wasn’t him. In his concern for his voice, he lost the essence of who he was. I encouraged him to rerecord, standing up, and giving life to his video. Not just any life, either. HIS life.

I can’t wait to see the results.
